Fame and wealth can be deceptive. With their kind of profession and
exposure to different sites and locations in different parts of the
world, celebrities get carried away with these inculcation of
civilisation. Soon, they experience lifestyle changes and with these
changes, develop habits that may be harmful to their systems. They begin
to drink more and sometimes take hard drugs. Money also gives them the
leverage to eat what they want and so they do that sometimes with
reckless abandon, giving no consideration to what is good for their
health or detrimental to it.’’ So says Victor Oyoyo, a medical doctor
who further explained that this pattern of living, plus their busy
schedules worsen the whole situation because they are unable to find
time to go to the hospital for regular check-ups.
“When they feel malign (symptoms of sickness), they fall back to the alcohol and hard drugs. During this whole process a damage is already done to their system and they begin to come down with renal failure, heart conditions, liver failure etc. These are basically the main issues,’’ he concluded.
For actors who experience depriciation in health at an older age, Dr Oyoyo gave reasons for their loss of good health as having underlying conditions for a while and because of their poor compliance to check-ups also, they get complications from the underlying conditions which ultimately can lead to death. He advises that actors value their health more than their career and endeavour to go for regular check-ups.
Kenneth Alfred shares Dr Oyoyo’s sentiments: “I think it has to do with their lifestyle. Most celebrities work in an edge, they live very recklessly and party all the time, drink a lot, smoke alot so I believe if they curtail some of these excesses, then they will be fine.” The Real Estate Agent retorts that most celebrities live on the fast lane because of the money they make and this lifestyle eventually affects their health.
Along same lines, Cuppa Umana believes that most celebrities don’t have time for themselves because they are working round the clock and it could skip their minds to check and know that certain symptoms could mean that a person has a terminal illness. But that more than that, everyone is vulnerable and not just the celebrities alone. “Death can come in whatever form, it could be sudden, like I heard of an actor who died in a shootout in Asaba. So things like that happen. Death does not say in which form it will come for an individual, the student said.”
Esther Julius is also of the opinion that we are all humans and anybody can fall ill and die at any time, if God wills it as only He preserves lives. According to her, celebrities make good money so she believes they should take care of themselves but even at that, when it is one’s time to die it is his or her time; there is nothing he or she can do about it.
She also stressed that early detection and treatment will go a long way to help someone live through any ailment. ‘‘Like in the case of Muna Obiekwe who died of Kidney failure, I feel if he had known on time and shared his problem with his fans, he would still have been alive. Sometimes these celebrities hide their problems because of their ego, and no one knows they are struggling with issues, and at the end of the day the person dies,’’ she said.
Solomon Faruq, seems to agree with Esther. The accountant stressed that most celebrities tend to hide their private lives and in the process, endanger their lives. He too believes if they share their problems with their fans early enough, they might be able to get aid to take care of themselves. “Celebrities should have a change of attitude and know that before being celebrities they are first of all human and so should not die in silence. When it has to do with life and death, I think celebrities should be more open.’’
Maria Asemota, is also of the opinion that if celebrities will devote more time to go for regular check-up and take their health more seriously than the roles they take up on screen, they will be better for it. As she put it, health is wealth and only healthy beings will live to enjoy their money and fame. Isaac Idaomi’s opinion slightly differs from the rest. The businessman holds that health is a general phenomenon and has nothing to do with celebrities. He said attention has drifted towards them because they are in the lime light. According to him, what affects our health basically has to do with what we deposit in our system, what we eat and drink majorly.
He also points out stress as well as environmental conditions as factors that affect one’s health too.
“People work themselves out and don’t take time to relax. For the celebrities because of the nature of their jobs, they travel from one location to the other shooting movies, and sometimes, their body don’t not acclimatise well with the new environment they are working and this may affect their health, he said.”
Isaac opined that daily work hours be increased so that one can finish his/her work in three days and use the remaining days of the week to rest because it will do people a whole lot of good.
