The 27-hour-long procedure was carried out by doctors at Vall d'Hebron hospital in Barcelona. The unidentified man had the operation to correct a medical condition causing severe facial deformities.
He had suffered a condition called arteriovenous malformation for the past 20 years. This is a tangle of blood vessels in the brain which diverts blood from the arteries to the veins, bypassing normal brain tissue. In this man's case, it caused facial deformities (pictured left) and problems with his vision and speech.
The complex surgery involved constructing most of his lower face, including his neck, mouth, tongue and the back of his throat. All the skin and muscles of his face, nose, lips, jaw, all teeth, palate and cheek bones were transplanted by using plastic surgery techniques and intricate microsurgery. Doctors say the operation allowed him to live a normal life, doctors said. The images show X-rays of the man before (left) and after (right) the procedure result of the operation.
