The jagbanjantis crooner, Sound Sultan, is an avid basketball fan known by many who are close to him. His love for the sport has now gotten him involved in the development of the popular Lagos basketball club named Lagos Islanders.
The singer and father of three has proved to be a man of his words after the news came few weeks ago that he had bought the team and given the Lagos Islanders a boost in attendance since the Atlantic Conference of the DStv Basket Ball League kicked off. Celebrities have even been showing up to add buzz to the good work the sponsors and National Basket Ball Federation (NBBF) are doing.
In an interview with a entertainment newspaper – NET, Sound Sultan disclosed that he only joined in having a stake in the club he was not the overall owner. His involvement had been on since last September but only coming into the media recently. “A group of young men came together with the aim of taking basketball in Nigeria to another level and get new converts to buy into the basketball industry. So for us, we have a man called Damoye who was the incumbent owner of the team, we have Ugo Udeze, Tajudeen Suleiman and myself. So, it’s not out of place that I now invest in the game. I bought into it because it’s passion driven,” said the lanky musician whose real name is Lanre Fasasi.
Sound Sultan revealed that he started playing basketball since 1991 although he never went professional. According to him, he was the basketball team captain in his secondary school days and even at the university. The music icon planning to drop his seventh album added that he did not go full time because the basketball was not viable back then.
“I actually used to play for Dodan Warriors. So we all came together like Voltron and we all have our strong points. Damoye has owned the team for the past 8 years and he understands the politics involved in the industry and he guides us in the right direction, Ugo Udeze is the only certified African Agent in the NBA as one of us, he understands the level at which the NBA operates and can infuse into the Nigerian industry as well. Well, I’m resident in Lagos, the fact that the ‘Lagos’ name is in it is another factor and we’ve not even gone the route of getting Lagos to sponsor us yet” he further explained about his involvement with the team. Sound Sultan however declined to state how much he invested in the team.
