With workers’ salaries owed by the Oyo State government running into
fourth month, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has
counselled the governor of the state, Senator Abiola Ajimobi to take
immediate measures to mitigate the suffering of the people in the state.
One of such steps, it said, is by the governor slashing his security
vote which it said hovered around N200 million monthly while his four
years of first term lasted.
The PDP also advised the governor to fix the embarrassing economic
situation in the state resulting in many homes not being able to feed
their families by reviewing the salaries, allowances and costs of
running government downward with immediate effect.
The party, which decried the policy summersault of the state government
resulting in Ajimobi withdrawing free shuttle buses for workers and
students alike, said the development showed a “deliberate and callous
disposition of the governor” to the needs of the people whom he pledged
to rule with the fear of God.
The party's position, which was made known by its chairman, Alhaji
Olayinka Taiwo, and a copy of which was made available to THISDAY,
stated: “As a matter of urgency, the governor should address the
economic situation in the state, which has led to the government owing
workers’ salaries in the last four months and the general lull in
economic activities in the state.”
This is just as he reminded the governor of the advice earlier given by
the PDP that he should declare his assets, noting that one month after
taking office for another term, the party “wonders why Governor Ajimobi,
who declared his assets in his first term in office, which should be
easy to update, has remained silent till date on the issue.”
