
An Akure Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting at Oke-Eda,Akure,Ondo State capital, yesterday sentenced one Wembe Martins Duclarie, a 30-year-old fake medical doctor to two years imprisonment.
According to the court, Duclarie, a Cameroonian, was found guilty of parading himself as a medical practitioner and operating an illegal hospital in the state.
Chief Magistrate Olubunmi Dosunmu, in his judgement, said the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt that the accused held himself out as a medical doctor without the requisite qualification.
The accused, who was arrested in April, 2014, was also guilty of administer treatment to people when he was not eligible to do so.
The offence according to prosecution is contrary to Section17(1) and punishable under Section 17(5) of the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act Cap M Laws of the federation of Nigeria, 2014.
The prosecution called four witnesses during the trial to testify in proof of the charge which commenced on August 20,2014, while the accused called a witness.
The chief magistrate pronounced the accused guilty as charged and sentenced him to two years imprisonment from the date he was arraigned in court.
Reacting to the judgment, the prosecution counsel, Wale Bamisile, said it was a victory for the judiciary, adding that the case suffered because of the 6-month strike by judicial workers in the state.
