Eleven children between the ages of 6 and12 years with holes in the lower chamber of the heart will from Monday undergo an open heart surgery to correct the anomalies which prevent them from either growing or feeding properly.

The Group Medical Director, Garki Hospital, Dr. Elijah Miller, who disclosed this while briefing the press on Monday in Abuja, explained that the programme was aimed at reversing the medical tourism witnessed in the country whereby hundreds of billions of dollars are lost yearly to other countries offering the same services.

According to him, this is the second phase of the free heart surgeries they started last year.
“We are interested in giving back to the society especially the needy Nigerian children whose parents cannot afford surgery, “ Miller said. “We have had the first session of these surgeries; this is the second and presently, we have eleven children so far and are ready to be operated upon in the next several days. And we believe that God willing, things will on successfully.”
