Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),
Prof Attahiru Jega, on Wednesday morning declared Gen Muhammadu Buhari,
candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the 2015
presidential election.
Jega, the returning officer for the presidential election, official declared that Gen Buhari scored a total of 15,424,921 votes to defeat President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who got 12,853,162 votes. Jega had since Sunday been collating results of the presidential election from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Buhari won by getting the required spread 25 per cent votes in two thirds of the states. He got 25 per cent in 27 states.
Jonathan also got 25 per cent but in 26 states.
Other parties AA got 22,125; ACPN got 40,311; AD polled 30,673; ADC polled 29,666; APA polled 53, 537; CPP polled 36,300; Hope polled 7435; KOWA got 13,076; NCP got 24,455; PPN polled 24,475; UDP polled 9,208; and UPP got 18,220.
The number of accredited voters was 31,746,490. Total valid votes was 28,587,564 while rejected votes were 844,519. Total votes cast were 29,432,083.
The total number of registered voters is 68,833,476.
Before announcing the results, Jega expressed gratitude to Nigerians for the opportunity to serve the country.
He also commended Nigerians for coming out in large numbers to participate in the elections. He also hailed permanent and adhoc INEC staff, noting the added value that members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) bring to the electoral process.
However a fresh drama ensued as the PDP agent refused to sign the result sheet, which commenced at about 3:20am. While former minister of Niger-Delta, Elder Orubebe, was conspicuously absent during the signing of the result sheets, the other PDP agent, Col. Bello Fadile, did not sign the result sheet.
He barely walked up to the high table bent over, seemingly whispered to Jega and walked away.
The APC agent, Sen. Olorunimbe Mamora, had signed the result sheet. While declaring the results Jega said “I Prof. Attahiru Jega, hereby certify that I was the returning officer for the presidential election held on 28 day of March, 2015.
“That the election was contested”
“That Gen Muhammadu Buhari, of APC having satisfied the requirement of the law by scoring the highest number of votes and highest number of votes is hereby declared winner and is returned elected.
“The two candidates of the APC and PDP scored more than the required number and in particular APC candidate obtained atleast 25 percent in 27 states, while PDP obtained at least 25 percent in 26 states. So they met the requirement of the spread.”
However when accosted for his refusal to sign the result sheet, Fadile, said the PDP will contest the elections at the tribunal. He said “we are going to contest the election as we ave already petitioned. The party is ready to go to tribunal.” He added “whether or not I sign doesn’t make any difference if I sign or not, you cannot approbate and reprobate.” Fadile and Orubebe had at the resumption of collation on Tuesday protested what they alleged is Jega partisanship during the polls.
