A Somolu Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Wednesday discharged six
girls, who claimed to be students of the University of Lagos, of
charges of assaulting a policeman and a woman. Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, the Chief Magistrate, said they were discharged following the withdrawal of the case by the complainant.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused were on Dec. 1, 2014 arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on assault and inflicting injuries.
They are Oluwafunmilayo Ogedegbe, 25; Boluwatife Akinyemi, 25; Adedayo Abiola, 25; Ifeoluwa Omogoriola, 20; Grace Olaniyi, 21, and Tolulope Ogunremi.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Nurudeen Thomas, said a mobile phone valued at N50,000 belonging to Mariam Alugba was stolen from her room at No. 6, Teslim Nasiru St., Bariga on Nov. 27, 2014 and was later found in the accused’s room.
Thomas said when the complainant requested to know how her phone got to their room they allegedly gathered to beat her up and inflicted injuries on her.
He said they were arrested by the police after the complainant had reported the case.
“At Bariga Police Station, they also gathered to beat up the Investigating Police Officer, Onyegbuwa.
“They were brought to court after the assault on the police officer while carrying out his duties.’’
They pleaded not guilty to the offences and were granted bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two sureties each one of who must be a blood relation.
NAN reports that while four of the accused were able to meet their bail conditions, two were remanded in Ikoyi Prisons as their families did not show interest in their cases.
The prosecutor, however, compelled the girls to sign an undertaking to be of good behaviour before they were set free. (NAN)
