No fewer than 111 women die everyday in the country because of child
birth complications and maternal mortality, facilitator of the United
Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Dr. Rabi Sageer has said.
Sageer told LEADERSHIP yesterday during a media interaction that most of the deaths are caused by heavy bleeding before and after delivery, noting that many pregnant women trek to hospital before giving birth.
“About 111 women die everyday because of child birth complications. Bleeding after delivery is the most killer of women during pregnancy but this is not widely reported as when a politician wins election.
“Government at all levels seems to be insensitive to this plight but 40 per cent of these deaths can be prevented through healthy timing and spacing. We must ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe and every person’s potential is fulfilled,” Sageer stated.
According to her, there is urgent need for exposure where parents would properly understand safe methods of family planning and further ensure adequate anti-natal healthcare to women.
