One person has been confirmed dead, a brand new Hiace bus and other
properties worth millions of naira burnt and destroyed, while several
people, including the Ohaozara West candidate of the Labour Party were
yesterday brutalised in an attack carried out by some thugs allegedly
working for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ohaozara and
Ikwo local government areas of Ebonyi State.
The coordinator, Ikwo Central Development Center, Chief Linus Amaga confirmed the incident, saying the deceased, Mr. Ogo Nwakpu of Agubia Ikwo in Ikwo Local Government Area of the state, was attacked by the thugs after the Labour Party campaign rally in the community and he died following complications from the injuries inflicted on him, adding another victim of the attack was in critical condition in a hospital in the area.
He said over 20 Labour Party supporters in the local government had been attacked and seriously injured by some suspected thugs working for the PDP in the last one month, adding the PDP resorted to attacking supporters and candidates of the party following the rejection of its candidates by the different communities and major stakeholders in the local government area.
“If the PDP is confident of winning the February general elections, why attack innocent Labour Party supporters.
“Elections are not won in Abakaliki capital city; elections are won at the grassroots. Having observed their total rejection by the people and their inability to bribe them into voting for the party, they resorted to attacking our supporters and candidates each time we move round to talk to our people”.
“How many of us would they kill? Even if it is only one person that is remaining in the entire Ebonyi State, that single person would still vote for the Labour Party,” he said.
