A driver, John Awotwe, who allegedly stole his employer’s diesel worth N108,500, was on Thursday brought before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos. Awotwe, 43, whose address is unknown, is standing trial on a charge of stealing.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Jimah Iseghede, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 26 at Surulere. According to him, the accused stole diesel worth N108, 500 from Crystal Nig. Ltd.
He said the accused, who drove a truck loaded with diesel, diverted it and sold it instead of taking the commodity to the company’s customer. “The accused did not return with the diesel to the company and also failed to remit money from the sale of the commodity.’’
Iseghede noted that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section provides three years imprisonment for stealing.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.F. Adeeyo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N90, 000 with a surety in like sum.
She said the sureties, who must be gainfully employed, should provide a bank statement duly signed by the bank manager. The magistrate adjourned the case to July 8 for mention.
