
The
Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Nigerian Security and Civil
Defence Corps (NSCDC) have deployed 55,000 personnel for Sallah
celebration.
The FRSC also disclosed that it has deployed 500 patrol
vehicles, 50 ambulances, 85 motor bikes, 10 tow trucks and over 15,000
personnel including special marshals, along designated routes as part of
measures to ensure sanity on the nation’s highways, during this year’s
Eid-el-Kabir Sallah celebrations with the theme: “Operation
Eid-El-Kabir,” from 21-28 September, 2015.
According to the statement signed by the spokesperson of the FRSC, Imoh Etuk, this year’s nationwide exercise which forms part of the corps’ build-up towards reducing road traffic crashes during this year’s ember season, was in partial fulfilment of the FRSC 2015 strategic goals of reducing road crashes by 20 per cent and fatality by 30 per cent and has become necessary to ensure safer road usage during the festive period. The special patrol also entails intensive patrols, prompt rescue services, strict enforcement of traffic rules and robust public enlightenment campaigns across the country.
Part of this nationwide engagement plans, according to the FRSC corps marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, was massive deployment of personnel and logistics along 23 designated critical corridors and black spots such as Lokoja-Benin-Auchi, Abaji-Lokoja, Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-HawanKibo-Jos,Minna-Birnin-Kebbi-Sokoto-Gusau-Funtua-Zaria, Potiskum-Damaturu, Kabba highways and 65 routes, identified for this exercise.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has said that it has deployed no fewer than 40,000 officers and men to monitor Eid-el- Kabir celebrations across nation, to provide maximum security.
The corps commandant general, Mr Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu, in a statement by its spokesman , Mr Emmanuel Okeh ,stated that the officers and men of the Civil Defence would collaborate with other security agencies to ensure effective security at the praying grounds and other public gathering during the festival.
Muhammadu gave the assurance that in spite of the worrying security situation in some parts of the country, adequate preparation was being made to protect both human and critical areas and other soft targets, to ensure that no lives were lost.
He said, “In our efforts to fight miscreants and criminal- minded individuals who see festive periods as the time to perpetuate their nefarious activities, all hands must be on deck in the areas of intelligence- gathering and reporting all suspicious behavior to relevant security authorities.
Hajj Rites Begin As Pilgrims Assemble At Muna
The five-day Hajj rites for this year’s holy pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia have begun with the arrival of over two million pilgrims to Muna yesterday.
The pilgrims who are expected to spend the whole of yesterday at Muna, will later depart to the plain of Arafat which holds tomorrow morning.
Many of the pilgrims arrived Muna from Jeddah, Riyadh, Madinah and other places from Makkah and other locations.
The total number of pilgrims for the largest human gathering worldwide has been put above two million by Saudi authority with Nigeria having about 76, 000 pilgrims.
The Director General of the Department of passports Maj. Gen. Solaiman Bin Abdulaziz Al-Yahya, said 1,374,206 foreign pilgrims have arrived for this year’s hajj.
He gave the breakdown of foreign pilgrims as 1,325,189 who arrived by air, 36,094 arrived by land and 12,923 arrived by sea.
While saying that 10 persons were caught transporting illegal pilgrims and were together fined SR240, 000, he said each one of them would serve 35 days imprisonment, and that the three cars being used were confiscated.
Plain clothe security operatives formed the larger percentage of the nearly 100,000 security
officials stationed at the holy sites to ensure the security and well being of pilgrims.
In another development the Commander of the media and awareness wing at the Public Security, Col. Sami Al-Shuwairekh said 35,990 vehicles were either seized or sent back while transporting pilgrims without hajj permits.
He told reporters Monday in Muna that security authorities have detected 12,850 violations so far
and that 1,295 smugglers were detained for carrying illegal pilgrims, while authorities have also
started legal action against 58 bogus offices engaged in cheating pilgrims.
NSCIA Felicitates With Muslims
The President-General, of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Sultan of Sokoto, Alh Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar yesterday congratulated the entire Muslim faithful’s on the occasion of Eidul Adha celebrations.
In a statement made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday signed by Prof Is-haq O. Oloyede it stated that, this year’s Eid celebration is an avenue for Muslim to be grateful to Allah (SWT) for allowing peace to reign throughout the year.
He said that this year’s Eid is especially significant and it provides a rare opportunity for Muslim faithful’s to supplicate to Allah to liberate Muslims from the shackles of its challenges which are evident in the sufferings of Muslims all over the world, especially from the Northeastern Nigeria to various parts of Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
He said, ‘’The significance of this year’s Eid derives from the act that for the first time in 20 years, three khutbahs will consecutively follow one another in three days. There will be khutbah on Wednesday (Khutbatul ‘Arafah), Thursday (Khutbatul Eid) and Friday (Khutbatul Jumuah).
He however urged muslims faithfuls to use the occasions of the blessed days and month of Dhul Hijjah as a whole to seek Allah’s divine intervention in making the world a more peaceful place.
