Trader Docked Over Alleged Assault


Prison Bars and Cuffs

A 32-year-old trader, Ikechukwu Igwe, who allegedly assaulted one Chigozie Udeh by beating him, on Monday appeared before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Igwe, a resident of Apapa area of Lagos, is facing a charge of assault.
The prosecutor, ASP Soji Ojaokomo told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 18 at No. 1, Amore St., Olodi Apapa, Lagos.
Ojaokomo said that the accused assaulted Udeh, a member of the traders’ task force, by beating him and hitting him with a padlock on his left hand, causing him injury.
“The complainant said that the accused opened his shop during the Thursday environmental sanitation and when he confronted him, the accused assaulted him,” Ojaokomo said.
The prosecutor said that the offence committed contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
However, the accused entered a plea of not guilty.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 171 provides for three years jail term for a person guilty of assault occasioning harm.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja granted the accused bail in the sum of N10,000, with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case till Jan. 19, 2015 for trial. (NAN)
