International and local Civil Society Groups (CSO), have
advised President Goodluck Jonathan to immediately reinstate the Dr.
Abdulrasheed Maina Pension Reform Task Force Team (PRTFT), or risk
losing pensioners’ vote, in the forthcoming 2015 presidential election.
A letter, with reference number: LW/P/01/2014, written in partnership with the executive secretary Legislative Watch, and former House of Representative member, Hon Ihuoma Ngozika said since the era of massive looting in the sector has resurfaced, it is only the PRTFT that can salvage the pension sector from what it described as “fresh and alarming increase in the looting of funds originally earmarked for pension payment.
The Civil Society groups, in the open letter to Mr President made available to the press on Sunday in Abuja decried the delay of President Jonathan in responding to pensioners’ request earlier made for the reinstatement of Maina led Pension Team to continue with it mandate.
The group, believed that in his ardent commitment to good governance, President Jonathan would have immediately heeded to the pensioners’ request.
“We shall wait and see what the actions of Government would be on this sensitive but very important issue that affects Millions of Nigerians”.
Hon Ngozika stressed that there had been unanimous consensus across the Country, that in the history of governance in Nigeria, it is only President Jonathan’s administration that pioneered and achieved a unique pension reform in which so much monies, estates and properties have been seized and confiscated. Many pension thieves have so far been arrested and prosecuted by the EFCC and ICPC, thanks to Mallam Maina and his led Pension Task Force.
The coalition said, that His Excellency’s achievements in the Pensions sector through the Mallam Maina Led Pension Task Team could get him all pensioners’ votes and their entire families’ votes for your re-election. These votes have a multiplying effect. He advised the President to reclaim and consolidate on those achievements Pension Task Force because it is necessary for the purpose of building the sincere support of all Nigerian pensioners.
They added that, “The Pension Task Team succeeded in meritoriously executing its assignment. While, the assignment was successfully ongoing, the Senate Pension Probe Committee abruptly came in and stopped it without reason; but only for false allegations against the Pension Task Team. There exists a very strong petition written by an aide and a Lawyer to one of the alleged pension thieves which was received at both the EFCC and ICPC on an allegation that bribery was given to some Senators in Cash, Farm Equipment and Properties in the person of the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Establishment, Mr Aloysius Etuk and it was published in the national dailies, and all Nigerians saw it.”
According to the letter, “ There was just no reason for the disbandment of the Pension Task Team as no culpability was ever established against Mallam A. Maina or his Team. This is evidenced by the Federal High Court Case (Maina versus the Senate) ruled in favour of Mallam Abdulrasheed A. Maina”.
