But Bente eventually came forward, and explained to the media that she already had three children and couldn’t cope with raising another trio.
“I hope people can understand that I just don’t have any possibility to feed or care for them,” she reportedly said.
“But I wish them the best and hope they have a better life than I can give them,” she added.
The triplets, conceived naturally, are reportedly all in perfect health - despite being born prematurely.
Doctors were initially unable to put them up for adoption, as they needed permission from the mother.
But she agreed to the process after being tracked down by the media. As she is illiterate, Bente put her thumbprint on the documents.
The infants are now being transferred to a children’s home, and will eventually be placed with a foster family.
Hospitals in Romania have reported an increasing number of babies being abandoned, with all the mothers saying they can’t afford to look after them.
“The causes of abandonment are mainly a lack of finances on the behalf of the parent,” said social worker Aurelia Ciresanu.
“Although there is also a lack of accommodation or support from immediate family which is also often a factor,” she added.
