The Caretaker Committee of the apex-Igbo socio-cultural organisation,
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Tuesday justified its recent solidatity visit to the
president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari on his electoral victory, insisting
that contrary to insinuations in some quarters, the visit was to
disabuse the mind of the incoming president of the notion that Igbos
voted against him.
The visit was also to ensure that the south-east was effectively
carried along in the scheme of things in the incoming administration,
the group said.
In a statement issued in Enugu by the Deputy Chairman of the Ohanaeze
Caretaker Committee, Chief Onwuka Ukwa, the organisation expressed
dismay at media reports credited to the Deputy President-General of the
Chief Gary Igariwey faction of the organisation, Chief OAU Onyema in
which their visit was reportedly described as the "height of rascality,
recklessness and disrespect to the laws of this nation".
The committee noted that Igariwey's leadership had long expired on
January 15, 2015 which led to the setting up of the caretaker committee
to midwife an election that would ussher in a substantive executives by
the Ohanaeze Elders' Council, stressing that rather than cause
disaffection among Igbo people, the Organisation should be allowed to
enjoy peace for once.
"Having failed to hoodwink the Igbos to put all their eggs in one
basket by canvassing shamelessly that all Igbos must vote for President
Goodluck Jonathan in the past election, we thought time has come for
them to give peace a chance instead of still causing troubles in the
system. Their alliance with the PDP fell like pack of cards.“
